Findings Industry background The full-on carbonated soft drink slump continued in 2006, marking the second consecutive year of negative volume gains. For the most part, the story remains the same, with regular, sugared CSDs suffering the most and diets performing somewhat better. Price and product/geographic mix increased net operating revenues by 2 percent in 2006 compared to 2005, primarily due to price increases across the majority of the operating segments and improved pricing and product/package mix in Bottling Investments partially offset by unfavorable product mix primarily in Japan. This fact reflect that once the price increased, the effects are quite slight for the loyalty customer’s buying behaviors, which means most of them may ignore or accept the pricing increasing as it is not higher than it competitors’. A lead in/ warmer can be introduced regarding this subject followed by activities after the listening exercise that would encourage students to practice their productive skill (listening). This exercise was chosen because students require a lot of concentration while listening to the task hence it demands listening. It also gives an opportunity for students to check their answers in pairs. (Scrivener 2005, p. 176). This lesson is appropriate to the upper-intermediate students as they should have the knowledge of lexis relating to advertisements. This means I can concentrate on a few words for lexis and therefore allow more time for the students to focus on their skills based part (listening) and their follow on tasks. TASKS Task 1: The pre-listening task (p. 64) This task is a good introduction to the topic of radio advertisements as it is easy. This will be a good lead in to the topic. Students will be asked to state th eir favourite advertisement and if they listen to the radio. A top down method has been used in this exercise where we are making use of what we already know to assist us to foresee the content and structure of the text. This gives an overall impression of the message (Scrivener 2005 p. 178). (Scrivener, 2005) states that we cannot use a bottom-up method i. e. building up the messages from individual small pieces. Even though this may sound appealing, however to do this it is virtually impossible. Task 2: The first listening task (p. 65) Before handing out the task I would set the question first. The question first technique is described as ‘‘task before audio’’ (Scrivener 2005 p. 172). The students will have to match the following options to the advert being listened to. For example which advert? Is selling soap powder Is trying to recruit personnel. The students will have the chance to listen to the audio. The students will have a basic understanding on how to do the task. If students have not found the answers to a specific section of the task, it would be necessary to play the recording again (Scrivener 2005 p. 172). This task is useful to introduce the text to the students. If students get the answers correct in the first attempt, this will help build confidence in them and students can move on to the next task. Task 3: The detailed task (comprehension check p. 65) Students will have a comprehension exercise in order to catch the specific details such as names, color and so on. I would assume that this exercise will be challenging to the students as they have to listen to the details carefully. However I feel that this exercise will help them pick up phrases such as ‘‘wherefore art though’’ and students will be familiar with it. As stated in Scrivener, 2005 it would be appropriate to play the recording more than once or sufficient number of times for the specific section the students are struggling on. As stated in Scrivener, 2005 it would be appropriate to play the part which the students disagree to. During the feedback session, the students will be allowed to check the answers in pairs. The recording would be played again until the students have reached an overall agreement to the answer and not just led by one student (Scrivener 2005, p. 176). Task 4: The follow on task (speaking skills) Group work: Newspapers and magazines will be given out to each group. The groups will be asked to choose an advert that appeals to them and discuss why they like it. This task should take ten minutes. This is supposed to bar Stark from running for senator. However, Stark used Jack to persuade Judge Irwin to make MacMurfee back out. Realizing that it is better to die than to live up to his past and submit to the blackmail, Judge Irwin committed suicide. Jack then learns that Judge Irwin is his biological father. Desperate to be a senator, Stark gave the hospital contract to MacMurfee even though this was cancelled when the former's son became paralyzed in a football game. Adam Stanton was angered at the discovery of the affair of Stark and his sister Anne. Thus, he killed Stark even though it also cost him his life. Jack later married Anne and wrote a novel about the confederate soldier. All the King's Men largely mirror the tenets of the American political culture. Earthquake in Chile Earthquakes The movement of the earths tectonic plates causes earthquakes. Earthquakes occur where plates meet along plate boundaries. F.e when two plates move towards each other, one plate can be pushed down beneath the other plate, into the mantle: this is a subduction zone. If this plate gets stuck under the other one, it causes a lot of pressure on the surrounding rocks. When this pressure will be released it will produce shock waves. These shock waves are called seismic waves. This is what we call an earthquake. Plate boundaries The place where two or more plates meet, is known as a plate boundary. There are four types of plate boundaries: constructive, destructive, conservative and collision plate boundaries. Almost all earthquakes occur near to plate boundaries. Earthquake in Chile The earthquake in Chile was caused by subduction. At the west coast of Chile, three tectonic plates meet: Antarctic plate, South American plate and the Nazca plate. Chile is located at a convergent plate boundary (a destructive plate boundary). The Peru-Chile trench is caused by the subduction of the oceanic Nazca plate under the continental South American Plate. This movement causes seismicity and volcanism in Chile, producing amazing earthquakes. This is a typical example of a continental-oceanic subduction zone. This earthquake was the biggest one that hit Chile in over 50 years. Measuring earthquakes The magnitude of an earthquake is measured with a seismometer. This machine measures movements in the surface of the earth. The Richter scale measures earthquakes on a logarithmic scale. This means that an earthquake of 5 is ten times more powerful than one of 6 on the scale of Richter. Most people express the magnitude with this scale. The 2010 Haiti earthquake had a catastrophic magnitude of 7.0.The Chile earthquake was measured 8.8, this means there is almost a widespread destruction. While in his sophomore year of high school, he began to assist a librarian, Mrs. Rulon. She eventually exposed him to the potential of the Internet and its abilities as a resource, along with the capabilities of the computer beyond a simple word processor. This was the beginning of his technological life. â€Å"You can learn anything,† Brian discovered, â€Å"and the name they gave it is exactly right, it is a ‘web’ that can branch off on whatever you are researching.† From this point, Brian has been all consumed with the possibility of the World Wide Web as a research tool. For Brian, a composition tended to be a culmination of literary works found on the Internet. Especially now, he has little use for creating new works. On the contrary, he typically researches in-depthly and pulls together the most important aspects found, into one article with Brian’s tone. Through the years, he has seen himself grow from visiting the... ...ch, with the Internet as his main resource. Lately though, things have seemed to change. The Patriot Act has him worried about the freedom of computers and the Internet. â€Å"I appreciate it, because so far, it is not censored. The free market place of idea and thought is what this country is founded on. It may be our downfall, but is paramount, and so important.† In the end, Brian has complete respect and admiration for technology, specifically the Internet, and the ease it offers him. His life has come to depend on it as it grows before his eyes. The old days of card catalog technology seem even humorous to him, â€Å"I remember helping Mrs Rulon organize the card catalog and thinking, ‘there has to be a better way then this.’† There is, and in the future there we will probably look back at the Internet of today and laugh while wondering how we ever functioned with it.
